Obituary

Denton, Michael John

May 18th, 1987 – January 23, 2013

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael, beloved husband of Carlyn. He passed away suddenly on January 23rd in Antarctica. Mike was the son of Carol and Sandy, loving brother of David, Christopher and Claire.  Mike was son-in-law of Fran and Ron Morrison, and brother-in-law of Jeff.

Mike was born in Calgary and shared his birthday with his Grandpa Jack who had many similar qualities. He was a very compassionate young man whose heart touched many people. He was thoughtful, honest, conscientious, hard-working and had a playful sense of humour. Mike loved the mountains and enjoyed activities like hiking, skiing and snowshoeing. He was a talented photographer who went out of his way to get extra special shots. Mike grew up knowing he wanted to be a pilot and pursued his dream career. Through his work as a pilot he had the opportunity to combine his love of aviation and travel.

As much as Mike loved airplanes he was always adamant that he loved Carlyn, his wife, even more. Carlyn and Mike met in October 2005 while attending the U of A and were inseparable from then on.  They shared an especially deep connection, loved being outside, dancing in their living room, and going on adventures of all sorts.  They were married in September 2012 in Calgary surrounded by the people who loved them.  Carlyn and Mike moved to Saskatoon last summer to continue their life together while Carlyn pursued her medical residency. They loved to travel, going to Eastern Europe in 2009 and spent last October exploring France together on their honeymoon.

Mike will be sorely missed by his extended family that includes his grandmother Jean Hogg; aunts and uncles Ted (Christine) Hogg, Susan (Barry) Hertz, David (Heidi) Hogg; cousins Alice, Rachel, Danny, Philip, Sarah, Geoffrey, Joseph and Alisa; great aunt Joan Dewar and numerous relatives from South Africa, and half-uncle Malcolm Denton.  He was pre-deceased by his grandparents Arthur and Daphne Denton, Jack Hogg, great uncle Zander Dewar and half-aunt Gloria Denton.

The families would like to thank Kenn Borek Air for their constant and open communication during the search for the aircraft, and all those involved in the international search and rescue effort. We would also like to extend our sincerest thanks for the support and prayers of people from around the world.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 1st, at Christ Church Elbow Park, 3602-8th St SW, Calgary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to STARS Air Ambulance or a charity of your choice. Condolences, tributes and photos may be posted at either www.borekair.com/memorial/mikedenton or  tributestomikedenton.blogspot.ca
